Currency in Kenya

Going on holiday to Kenya next week, and about to get my currency, I'm aware that I need some changed into the Kenya'n shilling, however I'm not sure whether to take £'s or $'s or Euro for the rest.

If anyone has been please advise on what could be best currency to take.

we were told by people living there to take dollars and lots of (only new ones though - post 1997 i think, as you get less for old ones due to many fakes being around  )

actually found i couldn't use them! in the hotels, the dollar rate they gave was terrible, and it was much better to use a nationwide card to pay in shillings, not £s!

ended up having to take a taxi to a currency change place to change my dollars into shillings. would rather have got shillings directly out of a cashpoint.

i was in nairobi a few months ago.
  • Dollars is the best thing to take. (I used to reside in Kenya and do go out there quite often). Credit cards are widely accepted and that Nationwide card that doesn't charge any commission or have any other charges is quite good (if you have one!!)
There are lots of forex bureaus all over the place so you won't have any problems changing money be it euros too but dollars are very common.
  • Tip:
Bartering for souvenirs is an enjoyable and accepted practice. T-shirts, jeans, a cheap (working) watch can all be exchanged for a nice carving or two, so take some spares along with you. On that note, a decent inexpensive watch makes for a nice gift if someone has gone out of their way to help you. I usually bring along a few when I travel to these parts.

A little off topic but i felt it relevant,
