New Partner - Tax Credits

Good afternoon all,
Just after a bit of advice please :-)

Husband left me a while back, and I now have a new partner who has moved in with me and my 2 children (1 & 2 yrs old).

Am I ok to start a new tax credits claim (joint) with new partner even though he is not currently on the tenancy, or the childrens father? - He earns approx. £20,000 per yr and I don't work.

Many thanks in advance for your time!

If you live with a partner you must claim with them, regardless of whether he's on the tenancy or the child's father.
  • Cheers for you quick replies :-)

Was asking because my ex is being a bit funny saying I couldn't claim with him because he wasn't on the tenancy or their father.

He's wrong. You must otherwise your claim would be fraudulent.
  • Just a reminder that you should also update your Council Tax record to reflect that you are co-habiting as your entitlement to single person discount will end.
