Hi all
I am currently unemployed and today received a letter from HMRC saying I owe £155.80.
This mistake is surely down to them or my previous company. What is my best course of action now?
Many thanks for reading.

What do you mean mistake?
There are many ways of underpaying and overpaying tax. You still owe it. Every time I've had small under payments I either pay or they incorporate it into my tax code.0 -
Which part of HMRC? Tax? Tax credits? NI? Child Benefit?
I assume as you've posted on the benefits and tax credits forum it's either child benefit or tax credits?0 -
@marlepanda, if they say I owe money then a mistake must have been made in the calculation along the line. Not sure if you're you're asking a genuine question or just trolling.
@darksparkle, sorry I'm no expert on this site as you are so I submitted it what looked the most appropriate. Sorry if it hurt your feelings.0 -

Doesn't hurt my feelings at all but we need to know what you owe to be able to give you advice. So is it tax? Or NI? What tax year is it for?
There are plenty of times when someone can owe tax and it's not a mistake. It will depend on the detail.
If tax you are talking about then you'd need to check your total pay and tax details for the tax year.0 -

No Comment. :rotfl:What happens if you push this button?0 -
It could be an overpayment of a 'credit' which is paid in advance, but an unemployed person is not eligible for it ? This would not be a mistake; just the way the system works.0

With respect gwin you asked what your best course of action would be on a help & advice forum. Surely that would be not to be rude to those who've taken the time & trouble to try to help & advise you. If you're unwilling or unable to do so whilst remembering the etiquette guidelines for the forum why post in the first place?0

Did you agree to pay tax?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

One respondent has nearly 3000 posts, the other about 1500. The person raising the question has 50. Who is more likely to be the troll?? If not a troll they are certainly going about it the wrong way if they are looking for assistance.
Nonetheless, in answer to the question, if tax has been underpaid HMRC will recover it if they possibly can.0
