Refund on cancelled credit card

Hello,
Sorry for a terribly macabre post.
My father has just died from an alcoholic related disease and this morning I started to go through his stuff. I found that he had several boxes of expensive wine delivered a few weeks ago which was extremely distressing to find, and I'd like to send it back and do something more positive with the money.
However I'm just about to go to the bank to close all his accounts and credit card. If I return the wine will they be able to either put it back on his card and the credit will still go on there or if I provide a death certificate can they transfer the money to me or his estate?
It's several hundred pounds worth of wine so I'm not really keen to just give it away, I'd rather get the money and give it to AL ANON or something.
x

So sorry to hear this. To answer your question, if the goods were bought on a credit card then the money will be refunded to the same card - assuming the supplier's terms & conditions will permit a refund. It may be worth keeping the bank account open for now, as many card companies do not like / permit a positive balance to be carried on a card, and will refund the balance to the linked bank account.

Once the money is refunded, it then becomes part of your father's estate in exactly the same way as everything else.

    Sorry for your loss.

First of all you need to find out if you can return the wine, I'm not sure of the status of food and drink in the latest Act, although sealed wine should be OK to return and resell anyway, but best to make certain. If you can then I would leave the credit card account open until the refund has been made and the money transferred out, otherwise it'll just add to the complexity of getting it into the estate.

And I think you should leave at least one bank account open and have your name appended to it (assuming you are the executor) so that you can deal with incoming money and any payments that have to be made.

If the wine was delivered a few weeks ago then the chances of them taking them back are slim.

Good point bris, I missed that, it would really be a goodwill gesture now if they do take it back.

Ring the wine supplier. Check that your father was not a member of a wine club that would continue to send out a case of wine every quarter, until cancelled.

Tell them your father has died and that you are cancelling his subscription (if any). Say that you would like, if possible, to return his previous order for refund.
