Integrated dishwasher, but freestanding?

Hi,

I've got the opportunity to pick up a 2-3 year old Bosch integrated dishwasher from a work colleague who is gutting her kitchen. However, our kitchen is all freestanding (IKEA Varde) so don't have an empty 60cm cabinet for it, but we do have 60cm of floor space next to the sink (could shove the work area over a bit)

Can I just plonk an integrated appliance on the floor and it will work as well as a freestanding one or do they come without feet and lack sound proofing (as usually they would be in a cupboard) and therefore cause problems?

Many thanks for any thoughts....

Usually they can kind of be used freestanding but there will generally be no lid on them and they will need a furniture door to counterbalance the appliance door weight wise. You may also have problems with it tipping forward with the door down as most require secured in some sort of way to stop this as, obviously, it would normally be fixed into a housing.

  • Ikea sell a Varde cabinet to mount built-in appliances.

It is 80cm wide, I'm guessing 70cm between the legs, as the worktops hang over so much.

I'm in the middle of buying this kitchen for myself, so it's all in my head at the moment.

You could buy a 60x70 adel birch door from ikea which is the same colour birch as the varde units and put this on the front of the dishwasher to conseal it. To block it in buy a length of plinth to cover the bottom of the dishwasher (£9 approx for 220cm length) and if you have any exposed sides buy a 195cm birch cover panel and cut it down and place it either side of the dishwasher. then put a bit of worktop on top and you have your built in unit. this does sound like alot of work but will be cheeper then buying the varde unit. however doing it this way will mean that the depth of the unit will be 60cm and not 65cm like the varde units that you have. also don't forget to buy a handle for the door.
    i hope that this helps
  • Hi,

Thanks for the comments everyone but decided against the dishwasher in the end as the parents have offered to buy us a new one (see my thread about Bosch v Siemens!) since new ones are a fair bit quieter which is important to us since our downstairs is open plan.

    Cheers,
