I am trying to get away from using my ISP provided email ready for changing supplier.

Following recent enquiries on the forum, I have registered a domain name with Easily.com & have set up GMX accounts for myself & my wife. I have used GMX because I have been able to get firstname.secondname@gmx for both of us which weren't available in Gmail. Also, GMX was recommended by most forum members.

I have used the Easily website & can now use GMX to pick up emails sent to myname@mydomain.com

What I need to know is if I can sent up GMX so I can send emails from addresses with ending in @mydomain.com. I have seen how to use aliases but the site will only set them up using their own domain namesI have contacted Easily & they just want to sell me an email service. I have also contacted GMX & they seem to be misunderstanding or avoiding the question, sending me instructions on how to set up a mobile device.

i am using the Thunderbird mail program rather than the GMX website for picking up/sending mail if that makes a difference.

I was told on the forum that it should be possible so can anyone guide me through it please?

Many Thanks

I'm probably being dumb here but I don't know what settings I should be using.

I know that when I send something to myname@mydomain.com, it ends up in my GMX inbox. But I don't know where it's come from.

If I click to reply, it is sent using myname@gmx.com not from my domain name. And that's the bit I want to change (if that's possible)

    Morning .....http://support.easily.co.uk/searchResultpage.aspx?stext=thunderbird&st=1&kb=2&cat=&subcat=&att=&remotesite=

But easily should have sent you an email with the details for their servers. I also note that the example given refers to POP not IMAP. I would use IMAP since you want to use GMX and presumably Webmail.

Edited: look here for TB https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/automatic-account-configuration

In the account settings in Thunderbird, just change the "Email Address" field to your domain address.

Better yet go to Manage Identies on the setting page add the two the OP needs, then you can click on the From in Write and select the requisite one. But that will still send from the one server.....

    Still struggling!

    Easily have sent me the following (edited) reply;

    Thank you for emailing Easily.

Unfortunately because you are using email forwarding rather than an email pop account with us, when you send emails it would appear that it is coming from myname@gmx.com rather than myname@cpf885.co.uk
    or wife'sname@cpf885.co.uk

You are able to purchase an email pop account with us for £9.99 + VAT

    Whereas GMX have told me;

    Dear GMX Member,

Thank you for your message, and please apologize for the last reply.

Via the webclient you can add your @cpf885.com account to your Mail Collector and fetch the emails via POP3 into the GMX account. You will than have the possibility to choose the sending email address each time, either the cpf885.com, or the gmx.com.

Regarding Thunderbird, unfortunately this exceeds our technical support and we kindly recommend you to contact Thunderbird if there is a such option.

However, we do not recommend you this solution, as you may experience sending issues in the future due to SPF checks that more and more email provider run.

An alternative solution we can suggest you, would be to contact our sister company 1&1 as they offer solutions to send emails from your own domain via our servers.

We are closing this ticket as resolved but if you have any questions in the future please don’t hesitate to contact us and we are glad to assist.

    With kind regards,
    Your GMX Support Team

When I try to use the GMX "solution" I enter the details into Thunderbird & it tells me that the Easily SMPT server does not use encryption & then tells me either my username or password are incorrect.

The only details I can find on the Easily website are for POP3, IMAP & SMPT servers but with no specified ports. I don't even know if that's the correct info as I'm just using Easily for email forwarding & not a "proper" account.

Well... that's not true. You just need to change the sender field in the email and you can make it appear to come from bill.gates@microsoft.com if you wanted (and can find an SMTP server you can authenticate on).

That sounds about right. You can add your new-domain-based email addresses to your GMX webmail settings, and then (by the sound of it), GMX will allow you to send messages from your new addresses using their SMTP servers (although possibly only via webmail -- you might want to try adding the addresses via webmail and then see if you can send from them using Thunderbird).

Indeed. If GMX won't allow you to send from your new domain using their own SMTP servers when using Thunderbird, then you may need to ask your ISP to allow you to authenticate on their SMTP servers using your domain-name-based email addresses.

Sometimes, you can log in to your ISP's webmail account and add your new-domain-based emails. With other ISPs you may just need to phone them up and ask them to add the new addresses to your account settings.

POP3 and IMAP servers are for receiving mail into your Inbox. (IMAP is more modern, so use that over POP3 unless you have a good reason not to). You are using a GMX account for this, so you would need GMX's IMAP settings along with your GMX username (your GMX email address) and password.

SMTP is for sending mail. So you'll need to use whichever account you can authenticate using your new-domain-based email addresses -- I use my ISP, but it sounds like you may be able to use GMX's.

If port numbers aren't mentioned, they are probably the default port numbers. Thunderbird should use the default port settings automatically if you don't change them yourself.

I'm failing badly on this bit. When I try to set up the Mail Collector it comes up with 2 x boxes. First box is "Email" (which I must assume to be the address that I'm setting up so I'm putting in the full firstname.secondname@cpf885.com. if that's right, I have to do this for any cpf88 addresses that I create?

Second box is Password. The only password I have for the @cpf885 stuff is the one to log into my Easily account.

Click create Mail Collector, wait a while then get asked more stuff.
Email (already filled in as previous)
Password (blank so re-enter PW as above)
Server (Don't know but have tried smtp.easily.co.uk taken from their website)
Port (No idea. have tried leaving blank, 995, 993, 25)
Username (again, No idea. Have tried firstname.secondname and my Easily account username.)

All combinations of above have failed. Am I missing something simple??

When I've tried that, I've got the following error message.

An error occurred while sending mail. The mail server responded: Requested action not taken: mailbox unavailable
Sender address is not allowed.. Please verify that your email address is correct in your account settings and try again.
