Doesn't bt have a bereavement department to help with such things?

Yes they do, and you call them on 0800 169 1663.

I believe the OP will have a number of options including closing the account.

His widow will not have to see out the remainder of the contract, which has already ended, as long as the proper procedure for closing the account is followed. As pointed out above, this is an everyday eventuality, and all providers have a process for it. If others continue to use the phones and the supplier s not informed, then the deceased will continue to be billed as before.
The basic process is that you simply have to provide evidence of the date of his death, which is exactly what will be needed for closing every other account in his name as the estate is wound up. The sooner this is done and probate granted, the better the financial situation will be for his widow, because until then funds will not be released, unless others have access to his accounts.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Not any more as this process has changed.

So what is the new process please? I can't imagine any company accepting any other evidence other than a copy of a death certificate as proof of demise. Not just BT.

Willing to take people on their word instead. I guess it caused too many complaints and they didn't like the bad PR it would cause in the Daily Mail.

    As said. Speak to BT.
They will be more than happy to retain your sister in laws business.
I would expect a new contract term though I'm afraid.

Fraud and theft, some of the !!!!!!!! Harped on in mse. That's for BT and the authorities to decide and not you

And how is it theft if BT are being paid?

It is not BT that is being defrauded but the estate of the deceased!

BT bereavement department were very understanding and compassionate when my mother died late last year. Stopped the line on the day we required,no extra charges and we got a rebate of the charges already raised in advance by cheque within a few days. Vastly different to the experiences I've had previously with BT "Customer Services" overseas.
