Buying a new toilet seat

Hello,
we need a new seat/lid for the loo. Are they one size fits all or not... if not, what would I need to measure to be sure I get the right one?
B&Q is about 30 minutes drive away so ideally don't want to be going backwards and forwards changing the one I buy, I'd rather get it right first time.
Thanks

Take the old one with you? There are standard sizes but it's hard to know if you've got one till you compare!0

If it has two holes (I each side) and you put a threaded rod through which you tighten up with a nut (including washers)I believe these are standard.
I use Amazon or Ebay to buy and its delivered.0 -
the only thing u really need to know is the distance between the bolt holes on the loo bowl.#141 - Save £3k in 2016 challenge - #141

There are a few different spacings for the mounts for loo seats but many seats are adjustable to allow for this and not all toilet pans have holes that go all the way through as Some have top fixings only.
There are also a fair few different shapes and sizes of seats available.0 -

Many loo seats (most?) are adjustable - certainly the last one I bought from B&Q was. If in doubt, take off the old seat, measure the distance between the holes and take a tape measure with you when you buy a replacement!
tip: get one with plastic bolts/nuts rather than steel ones which rust and can be tricky to undo...For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
As per other replies, easiest thing is to take the old one with you.
But in general, the seat itself is usually a standard size, it's the fixings that vary - the distance between the bolts, and whether its a bolt that goes all the way through the pan with a wing nut on the bottom, or a blind fixing bolt.
It's also worth having a look online - you can buy them from any number of sites, and they usually give the dimensions etc. on the site so you can easily double-check that it'll fit.0 -
Or if you don't want to walk around carrying a loo seat, just take a paper or card template with you to the shop. As mentioned above, the crucial dimension is the bolt hole distance. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Definitely take the old one with you or you'll have nothing to go on.;)You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0
