    Where do they state this?

I have just looked at their website, and it only says you must show a valid passport (or identity card). If you telephoned, you probably spoke to someone who doesn't know what the rules are.

You will need to have 6 months validity in your passport after your date of return and we recommend that you have some blank pages in your passport for entry/exit stamps.

There are two different P&O operations - the ferry company (which won't have any special passport requirements) and the cruise operator which does. I would guess for ease of checking on its world wide operations calling at many ports - sometimes unscheduled

P&O won't even check it for EU citizens.

But would you risk being denied boarding and losing a paid-for cruise?

As dzug1 points out, it is the cruise arm of P&O, which is not the same as hopping on a ferry across the channel.

P&O may well call it a cruise but it's just the ferry to Belgium and back along with the rest of the normal freight traffic etc.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

They will, because exit checks are carried out at every UK port and airport if you're leaving the UK.

If you're on a P&O cruise you have to enter your passport details online. It won't let you if you've got less than 6 months remaining at the date you return.

There does seem to be a contradiction here - very odd. Do passengers leaving Hull (assuming that's where it is) get different treatment depending if they are ferry travellers or cruise travellers? Or do they all get treated the same and if so as what?

I'd assumed a taster type cruise out of maybe Southampton on a 'proper' cruise ship in my answer.

No, if you're leaving on a ferry from Hull or Dover there are still exit checks, so you would get your passport or National ID card checked and the details taken from it to pass to the Home Office.

P&O cruises ask for full Passport details as part of the final booking process. If the passport has less than 6 minths they will refuse boarding.

The reason being P&O do cruises all over the World. It is far easier to have a single rule than have yet more smallprint indicating which Countries you can visit without having 6 months remaining.

Web site did let me put her passport details in even though she only had 4 month left on it so I didn't know she needed 6 months on it till I printed the e-tickets out that's why it was a mad rush to get an appointment from passport office so we could get it the same day:eek: it all got sorted in the end and we had a great time will deffo book a longer 1 next time;)
