Circular windows?

Simply out of curiosity, does anyone know why you'd want to replace ordinary windows with round ones?

This is in a detached post-war (I'd guess 1960s but possibly 50s or 70s) house which has recently changed hands. It had three ordinary first floor windows to the front elevation, but these are now being replaced by four round windows about 2.5 to 3 ft in diameter. It's going to look quite odd when it's finished as the round windows are completely at odds with the otherwise rectilinear character of the house. I'd also guess that the total glazed area will be significantly less than it was before so they'll let in less light - which surely is the point of a window. The house is set back from the road so no privacy issues.

So why do it? Aesthetically it looks weird so I presume it's personal taste. I can't imagine it adds any value to the house. In fact I'd think the opposite. I wondered if there may be structural reasons (everything seems to be getting ripped out and there are supports inside) but can't think of any.

Any ideas?

Job lot off e-bay is my guess.........

Or you live on the set for "Lord of the rings" in the Shire.......

Circular windows have always been fitted as a feature on a property rather than for any practical reasons ,unless they lived on a ship.

Just to add , making a curved or circular window is an expensive process unless you make 50 at a time.

It could be "the next trend" - one of my neighbours replaced their door the other week (it does look lovely). Now they're the only ones without an identical door and they've got a huge round top window (1/3rd of the door size almost).

So, maybe round is the next big thing.

I, myself, was thinking of a little porthole window as a shower room window the other day, until I realised it'd be a faff to get a blind to fit and it'd all cost me more money than a regular window.
