Changing Nepal currency back to GBP - sell it on ebay?

I've got around twenty quid of Nepal rupees left over from a trip. The post office don't seem to change this currency. I'm wondering - could I sell this on ebay to the highest bidder, see what I can get for it? Or is this one of those things that's fraught with difficulties (fraud etc)?

Nepalese currency does not have any value here as there is no UK market in it.

You could try a climbing forum to see if anyone visiting the area will give you anything for it or as you have already mentioned you could try e-bay.
  • The Nepalese rupee is a closed currency and it's illegal to import and export it. That's why they're not available to buy outside Nepal, hence the Post Office (and other fx bureaus) don't deal with it.

Best chance would be to exchange it with someone going to Nepal, so they can jump straight into a taxi on arrival. The season is beginning now.

If you happen to be near or pass by an area where Gurkhas or other Nepalis live (Southall, Aldershot, Tonbridge..?) you may find an exchange bureau that would take it.

Is it in reasonably crisp Rp.1000 /500 bills, or including many ragged stinky small bills?

I go there regularly, and always save a few notes that are in good condition, for next time. Aren't you going back..?

Mostly raggedly bills! Not planning on going back, for a few years at least.

Other option then is to stick it in one of those charity boxes that collect foreign currency. Anyone know if this would actually work or would they chuck the rupees away?

Brighten up someone's day. Have a look through the Aldershot BT phone directory. You won't have much problem finding an obvious name. Stick the money in an envelope and post it off.

    Here's a start...

Every flight that I've taken over the last few years has had an envelope accepting any currency for charity and I usually trust these with my leftover currency to this sort of amount if I'm unlikely to use it again.

This is a good idea, the Nyingma Buddhists are fully trustworthy, these have some relief projects and no doubt there are members travelling to Nepal who can take care of the cash. Check with their treasurer before mailing it off:

I was thinking to suggest mailing it directly to Nepal, I support an orphanage and other projects there, but a letter to Aldershot is cheaper and more certain to arrive.
