Demand for money i have paid!

Options
I received a letter and an copy of the invoice in February from a company saying i owe them money from back in September/October time. I paid this money in cash to them back in December after asking them continuously for three months when they wanted me to give them the money and being told to wait until i hear from them. I heard nothing and so went to the place and handed it in. When i received this letter asking for payment i emailed them immediately and told them i had already paid it. I did receive a reply saying they would look into it. I heard nothing back. Now today i have received a demand letter from a collection agency asking for immediate payment or they will start legal proceedings.
Does anyone know my rights with this?

    When you paid the money in December did you get a receipt?
    :footie:
    :p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

    Wow, if you can speak to the person you actually handed the money to, it would help;
    make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

    I handed it at the customer service office, I wouldn't know who it was.

    I called the collection agency and told them I'd paid it and they said go back to the company and tell them to update their records. I emailed the company but have not heard back.

    I have read on this website that a company cannot pursue you for money if you dispute that you owe it or have paid it whilst it is investigated. Not sure what more I can do now?
