Someone managed to somehow not see and reverse their car into the Vauxhall Zafira belonging to my wife and I (Snatch springs to mind).

The car was parked and unattended. My wife is the policyholder for our insurance and I am a named driver. I am the registered keeper of the car. I notified them of the incident (for information only) and am claiming directly off the 3rd party's insurer (who have accepted liability)

So, when insurance renewals come around, who needs to declare the non-fault claim, remembering there was no driver? My wife (she is the policyholder whose insurance has been notified) or me (who has handled the claim and is the registered keeper)? Is there a risk it could be both, and I should ensure any payout goes to my wife so that only one of us needs to declare it?

When you notified your insurer who did you say was driving/parked the car?

It will go down as their claim.

Thanks Quentin. I emailed the insurer to tell them the car had been hit while parked and I would be pursuing it directly with the 3rd party. I didn't specify who had parked the car and they haven't asked. Nor have the 3rd party insurer.

If they've recorded it against me (as I declared the incident) does this mean my wife doesn't need to declare it on future quotes even though she is the policyholder?

As long as you remain on her policy as a named driver then this needs to just go down as part of your claim history

    If the question asked is

"Have you, or any named driver had any accidents, made any claims or suffered any loss", then she has to answer "yes" if you will be a named driver.

If you aren't going to be a named driver, then she can answer "no" as she hasn't (if you get it fixed and she pays nothing).

So as Quentin says, it doesn't affect her claims history, but it will affect her policy as you are more of a risk.

I won't take offence if you say INOYB but,
is there a reason your insurance arrangements are this complex, why is the policy for your car not in you name?
Whilst probably a rare occurrence this could result in the loss of both sets of NCD..

Maybe he passed his previous car to his wife, I have done this in the past.

I'm not sure how the arrangements are complex - I'm a named driver on her policy, that's fairly common :)

Yes we swapped cars a while back, which is why it's still registered to me. An accident shouldn't affect more than one NCD - there's only one policy on the car.
