Selling a car 'as Spares' advice required.

Never sold a car before, let alone one as spares! I will be listing the car for sale in a few places, like eBay, Gumtree etc.

I'm confused as to how to deal with the V5 document, and what needs to be filled.

If I sell it privately, I understand I keep one section & buyer completes their section & we send it to the DVLA.

What if a trader, or a mechanic, or scrap guy want to buy it off me? I cant see them wanting to become another owner of the car.

What if I part ex it for something else? Do I give the garage/trader etc the entire V5 and not complete anything?

Very confused.

Thanks

You give the buyer the new keeper slip (section 10) and you send off the rest to the DVLA simple as.

If its a trader then fill in the selling to a trader section (section 9) and send it away giving the trader the rest.

If you give a trader everything then expect a nice bill from the DVLA for failing to tax/SORN/Insure the vehicle etc..
Part ex is selling to a dealer.

I scrapped a focus last month, the car was left in a garage i use along with the log book so they could get the first scrap bloke to come song to fill in.
He took the car and I've just had a letter saying it hasn't been traced so I need to tax our down it.
I called dvla, explained and simply needed to send a letter saying I have scrapped the car and am no longer the owner.
    All sorted.

    Hi again.

I'm still a little confused - apologies. I tried reading the V5 document and I nearly ended up ripping it up!

When I sell the car, the buyer detaches the bits on the side i.e.

    (Trade/Scrap sale: Section 9: V5C/3W) or
(Private sale: Section 10: V5C/2W) & they send it off to DVLA...

That leaves me with the rest of V5 document to hold on to & send to DVLA to confirm I've sold it?

Do I have to get their name /address in Section 6? What if they dont give me their details, do I just sign & send it off as it is?

Side issue, I paid 12 months Road Tax upfront, so that leaves about 7 months still owing to me. How do I get that back?

    Sorry for sounding dumb!

You should get their details, at least to protect yourself. I'd always make sure I sent the section off, came unstuck on that one before when buyer "helpfully" said they'd send it. 6 months later tax renewal was still coming to me!

If they're taking the whole car - whether they're driving it, trailering it, or sweeping it into binbags - then just fill the main V5C in, send that off, and give them the green slip. UNLESS they're a trader, in which case, send the yellow slip off and give them the rest.

You don't know for sure if they're going to break it, sell it on, or put it back on the road. Their choice.
