what I would like is an incentive for people to go out and work; the balance is skewed so that that isn't the case for so many people (or people work a bare minimum with no incentive to work more)

If you think all that women gets is £70/week you are naive.

She is living rent and council tax free in a 2 bedroom house in a nice area and has the privilege of taking her child to / from school everyday and doesn't have to worry about the inconvenience of child care or battling through the rush hour to get to the child minders after work before trying to do homework at the same time as cooking dinner and doing the washing and ironing

How much to do you think I should be taxed to pay for her privileges?

my labour supporting parents always refer to the principle of paying benefits so that people don't riot / rob. Would paying for more policeman be more economic?
It's called a welfare state. Soldiers returning from the front after WW2 decided Mr Churchill needed a rocket up his !!!! because he had no idea how most of them lived and they felt that they deserved a better life....especially after the sacrifices they had made for their country...........so they voted in Clement Atlee and the rest is history for which you should be profoundly grateful if you are blue collar/working class. Watch Bernie Sanders and compare him with Donald Trump.

it would appear that history shows it to be largely conservative

No, and it would not solve the problem. Trust me, I've lived in such societies. The UK is a far nicer place to live and we're able to live comfortable good lives while making sure those who aren't privileged or don't have quite the same abilities are able to do the same.

EDIT: By the way, if you wanted such a society, I'm not sure you could find one. You could pick up your UK wealth and move to any number of African countries where you can live like a king. The trouble is, you'll live like a king in a castle protected by high fences, barbed wire and private security. Around you, anywhere you go, will be signs of your fellow human beings in desperate poverty and not able to get out because the state doesn't care much. On top of that, you'll still have high taxes, only now they'll go to line the pockets of the corrupt f u c s in charge and their extended family and friends.

Honestly, we're very privileged in the UK. I get equally as annoyed at right wingers talking about scroungers as I get about about the left complaining that the Tories are the devil incarnate because poor Mary can't have her three bedroom house in Islington anymore.

You're naive if you think she has more than £70p.w kline disposable income. The majority of which will go on the bare essentials such as food. Have you not watched benefit Street?

It's all me me me with some people isn't it. She should be sent to a workhouse and her child should be brought up by nuns.
Seriously though....accepting that any blame if any for her situation is not her child's fault............ What solution do you therefore suggest? If she is asked to find work...........Who will care for her child and how much would that cost? Is she likely to find a job that would cover her council tax, rent and child care costs? Be realistic now, you seem to know so much about her circumstances....over to you?
