Paying back old energy supplier

Options
I switched enegery suppliers in January 2016. I was in credit with my former energy supplier and they refunded me this money straight away without having to ask for it. Now, nearly three months later, the switch is complete, but I have received a bill from my former energy supplier stating that I owe them money. Do I have to pay this? Any advice anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, if you owe them for energy you have used.

Why they have now sent a bill depends on how you closed the account with them.

Were you still in credit after they produced the final bill?

Or did you take/request the credit from the account and then initiate the switch?

What happens normally when you switch is that you give an opening meter reading to the new supplier. That company then gives the opening reading to your current/old supplier to use as their account closing reading.

Your current/old supplier then produces a final bill (this may tak a while). If you are still in credit after this point, then that is the time to request the refund. If you are in debit at this point you need to send a one off payment to clear it.

What you may have done is take the credit from the account before the final bill was produced (some companies can take a while to produce a final bill). When the final bill was produced, as you have no credit in the account....you owe them.

Understand? The above is only a guess. Give us more details if the above does not apply.
