Making a planter out of a log

I have a section of log that I want to use as a horizontal planter.
It already has a natural hollow area but I would like to excavate it a bit to give more width and depth for the plants. Would a wood chisel and mallet do it? I would rather not mess around with a saw - which I would have to buy anyway.
I have no idea what sort of wood it is - it's the remnants of a tree that was brought down river by the floods.
Cheers

It's worth a go, I've seen it done before. Some wood is harder than others, so you'll just have to try it and see how far you get. You'll need a pretty big hole though. Good luck
  • Maybe use a large drill bit to form a network of holes. Then chip away.
    Use protective eye ware.

    Thanks folks.
I could probably grow some plants in the existing dip. Would just like to give them a bit more space.
