Transferring private plate?
I understand you first need to transfer off original vehicle - cost £80. Do you then get a certificate that enables you to transfer to a new vehicle?
What happens to the first vehicle then (the one you took plate off)? Does this then get re-assigned its original plate?
Obviously, then I guess you need to inform insurance company about plate change.
How long does this all take?
Wife is getting a new car end April and she wants to take her private plate. Plan is then to sell old car.

YES - it's called a Retention Certificate

YES

10 minutes online + however long it takes you to either find and replace the original plates - or buy and fit new ones.

If this is a 'new' new car then the dealer will use the Retention Certificate to put her retained 'Cherished Plate' on the new car right away.
There will also be a normal registration number generated for the new car for future use when she retains her Cherished Plate before the next car purchase.
If it's a used car then you just go online and swap the number over using the code/reference number on the Retention Certificate - again it takes only 10 minutes.
Quite a change from the old days.0 -
Do you know what happens if I retain the original registration of a car? Do DVLA issue a new one back dated to original year of reg?
Asking because (1969) when I imported a 1967 vehicle tthe plate was for 1969I am not a cat (But my friend is)0 -

They stopped that in the 70s. Since then, imports etc get age-related plates.0 -
Hi, I have worked in insurance for a number of years but have just left due to childcare. Yes inform the insurance company as soon as you know the date the plate will be changed. The plate may be registered against a former car that plate was previously on, as soon as you have the date on the paperwork stating you are legally registered with the DVLA on that plate the insurance clerk will then assign that plate against your car or perhaps the system DVLA link is updated in time. Is the other one coming off another one of your cars? or is it getting bought from another car owner? The former car will probably need a dvla re-register.0

Maybe you refrain from bullying other postersIf someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0

Thanks Cal. Not sure why other posters are being mean to you?0 -
