They are not all as bad as has been said here.
I'm quite pleased by my local KF who are less likely to recommend work than the main dealer!
We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
The earth needs us for nothing.
The earth does not belong to us.
    We belong to the Earth

3 years ago visited KF and they told me my front section of the exhaust had blown and in the process they noticed the back was rusting (discoloured really) and suggested that it did not have long left and should have it changed.

I only had the front done, and now about 3 years later, the front has gone again while the back is still untouched.

Your right there is a few good ones out there but they are so few and far between that the good ones will end up being tarred with the same brush as the rubbish ones. Like any chain they have targets to meet from head office so a lot will pray on the unknowing as an easy way to meet those targets!!
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • Went to kwik fit as my car kept cutting out. They told me I had to go to a dealer because they were the only ones who could deal with the problem. Said I should not drive my car as it was dangerous to do so. Spoke to my dad who recognised the earth wire was not attached to my car and bought a new end for the wire costing 23p. No doubt the dealer would have charged a lot more even just to establish what the problem was. Never again.

There are three kwik-fits locally to me, two are horrendous, and the third are brilliant - my exhaust broke about a year ago, and I took it in to be fixed, expecting it to cost the earth. Grand total - £10 for a clamp which should hold the exhaust on, but had snapped. Oh, and they didn't take my debit card, and I had no cash on me, so they let me go back a few days later to pay them ("It's fine, pop in next time you are passing"!).
A few weeks ago, I took the car in to have the headlight bulb changed (needed the car, weather was miserable, coudln't be bothered doing it myself), they charged me £2.99, and gave me a coffee while I waited. I don't think I could have bought the bulb for that!

To be fair to Kwik-Fit they honestly stated that they couldn't fix that fault and told you -- they're fitters not mechanics, much less electrical technicians. For a lot of electrical faults on newer cars the main dealer can be the most sensible place to go. Without properly looking at the car they couldn't diagnose anything, regardless of how simple the fix was.

And a car that continually cuts out is potentially dangerous.

I haven't had any problems with KF to be honest. Their prices aren't the cheapest, and their exhausts don't seem to last very long, but I've never had one attempt to rip me off. Rapid-Fit on the other hand, years ago told me an old car was unviable at MOT, but an independent had all work done for £150.
