Good price for a renault

Thank you all in advance but does this look reasonable and is this a good reliable economical model?

  • I nearly choked on my coffee when you said Renault and reliability in the same sentence however having clicked the link and saw it was the old shape scenic I was relieved.
    I had one of these and they are good cars without the horrible issues that the newer French cars have.

    This looks alright on paper.

    I used to have one of these, it's a great family car if you have kids. Loved the high driving position. My son even cried the day we sold it. The few problems I had I was able to fix myself.


    Moved to the newer scenic II which has been nothing but trouble. Go for it, plus at 2.0l it will have some punch.

    I have to say that the Renaults I have owned over the years have all been reliable, certainly no worse than any other car.

    Avoiding to many electrical gimmicks is always a good idea for long term ownership or ownership outside of warranty.

    The 2.0 16v petrol is not going to be particularly economical.

    The price is dictated by demand to an extent.

    There is always a market for family cars around a £1000.

    A quick check on "Total Car Check" shows the last MOT expired in July 2015. I assume the garage will MOT the car when sold but just be aware that it appears to have been off the road for 8/9 months at least. Not a massive issue but may allow you to negotiate on price?

    On the plus, the mileage checks out! Mileage figures are available on it from 2006 showing a gradual increase from 22371 (in 2006) - 66467 (in 2014).

    At that age I would be looking for recent cambelt and waterpump, tensioner etc change as by time (not mileage) it is due.


    Some common things that might need replacing are, brake discs, brake pipes, ignition coils etc.


    The 2 litre is only likely to return around 26-28 mpg at best during mixed driving.


    Any warning lights on will result in a trip to a Renualt dealer to establish the fault codes as most non Renault scanners that independent workshops have can't read the faults.


    I speak from experience having had 3 of same model but smaller engines, having said all that for me they fitted my needs exactly.

    You can get aftermarket versions of Renault diagnostics.

    Any half decent mechanic will have access to decent diagnostics

    The Renault one is called CanClip if I remember correctly.

    You could direct the same comment at VAG vehicles and Vauxhall vehicles aswell.

    At £1000 that Scenic is bangernomics, you would have to do the sums to see if doing the cambelt etc was financially viable. Obviously if the OP can do that kind of work themselves then the cost would be minimal.

    Cars of that value would get regular oil changes plus repairs as needed in my ownership.

    As soon as a big ticket items like a clutch needed done then disposal on eBay would be my next move.

    I don't know the OP, and this is no slight on him/her, but I seriously doubt that someone who asks the OPs question that started the thread would be happy to carry out that work.

    Exactly what i was going to say RE: timing belt and water pump. Also these engines have a dephaser pulley on them which gives trouble and is generally changed at the same time.

    Its not a pleasant job, and a good indy will charge £500 for the lot, and renault between £800 and £1,000.

    Sadly i know this because i just got that all done to my Clio 197 2.0 16v and my local dealer relieved me of £888. :eek:

    Realistically, you'll need EVIDENCE its been done - theres no way the dealer will have the sort of margin it would take to get it done in the price.

    Otherwise, decent enough cars. Robust engines - i've a 2002 Clio 172 that has had a HARD life and the engine is still as tight as a drum at nearly 100,000 miles.

    The timing belt on those requires 3 specific tools that are around £50-60 each for decent ones. Its a !!!!!! balls of a job that is fiddly and easy to make a (expensive) mistake with.

    A dephaser pulley, water pump and timing belt kit comes to around £250, plus maybe another £250 fitting.

    I'd leave it to a specialist, but frankly i wouldnt touch that car if it hasnt had it done already. Far too big an imminent bill looming
