Cleaning gravels in garden

Options
Hi all

Part of my garden is covered by gravels, about 6sqm. I just occasionally pull the weeds out in the past 5 years. It is now full of weeds and moss. Underneath the gravels there is a sheet of barrier. I am not sure the condition of the barrier. Can you think of any way to make this pit of gravels looks good again?

I'm thinking about digging all the gravels up and put new gravels on, but it will cost a lot of money and it's a labour intensive job. Can I clean the gravels where it is now? If I dig the gravels out, can I clean the gavel without buying new ones? How do I clean it?

I've just bought some of this - saw it on shopping TV. I've not used it yet but the reviews appear good.

If there is a lot of not terribly heavy but boring digging to do, you may want to approach your local Scout pack. There are safeguarding issues to get around, but the cost will be an agreed donation, it'll be done under something like Bob a Job auspices & you won't need to worry about accidentally poisoning the neighbour's pet cat.

Cleaning gravel with a riddle & a pressure washer will be Very Popular with Scouts...

Another approach may be to remove the existing gravel, put it in a large container ( an empty dustbin, maybe ? ), cover it with a strong-ish solution of either bleach or Jeyes fluid and let it soak for a day or 2. This may well shift most of the muck for relatively little expense. Give it a stir up every so often.

Whilst the gravel is soaking, you can replace the weed-proof membrane if necessary. You can buy the membrane very easily at places like B&Q, Homebase, Wickes, Jewsons, etc., and no doubt online.

When you've laid the membrane, replace the now-clean gravel. This should spruce the area up for not too much cost.
