Family Holiday - Summer

Looking for a great place to stay in Menorca, Majorca, Ibiza....family of 4 (two children age 9 and 7)...just before school breaks up in July to save some cash. Possibly AI. Any recommended hotels/complexes?

Thanks.

Sol Melia hotels are pretty good for kids and they have several of them thoughout the Balearics. They have a 'Flinstones' themed kids club and lots of great activities for them. Viva Hotels are another great choice for Majorca.

Tropic Garden in Santa Eulalia is quite popular and close to the beach, Iberostar Cala Millor in Majorca or Royal Son Bou Family in Menorca are all good choices.

For Majorca I would say AVOID Bellevue Club Complex. It's massive and very Butlins-esque and avoid El Arenal as this is a german / scandi 18-30 resort and a lot of the 'family' hotels we sell in the UK are shared with their 18-30 programme! In Ibiza avoid the San Remo E'stanyol and Bergantin is San Antonio Bay are very lively from June-Sept and cheap so full of party people and not what I would say family friendly.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I know the Tropic Gardens in Santa Eulalia, Ibiza quite well although I haven't stayed there myself, and it's popular with families, although not very near the beach. Look at Tripadvisor for resorts such as Es Cana which has a good selection of all inclusive hotels, always good when with children due to the cost of drinks. Hotels such as the Ereso or the Miami have many repeat guests.

Have a look at Hotels Viva:

    http://www.hotelsviva.com/en/

They have several properties in the Balearics and are readily available through many tour operators and travel agents. Most are for families with a small number of adult only properties.

We stayed in one in northern Majorca when our kids were younger.
  • We love San Miguel Hoteland Beachclub in Puerto San Miguel Ibiza. Hotel is s a Firstchoice hotel and Beachclub is Thompsons. We book direct with hotel and get separate flights. Same families return year after year. It;s great for kids. It's also on booking.com but called Cartago Hotel on this site.

We have been to Puerto Pollensa twice and loved it- we stayed in Las Velas apartments which aren't AI and quite a small complex (our kids were 2/3 and 4/5 when we went on 2 successive years) so with older kids probably be bit too quiet but PP is a great resort and there's certainly plenty of other accommodation there, including AI- that said the selection of restaurants in the town itself is excellent.

We also did 1 year in Santa Eulalia in Ibiza and thought the resort was OK but not as nice as PP

Another vote for Es Cana here. Went a couple of years ago with DD and DS (17 & 15), and although it wasn't ideal for them (not enough nightclubs :D), it was very, very family friendly. Small fairground in the middle of the town with lots of things for kids around 3-12. 2 good beaches, and nobody really seemed to complain about their hotels. Short bus ride to Santa Eulalia as well, so you can find McDonalds / KFC et al.

I've been to Palma Nova a few times as well, but not sure there is just as much for younger kids there.

I'm not sure hotels will be much cheaper in July before schools break up - in most of Europe including Scotland the kids finish much earlier than in England eg June or early July. You might find late August is cheaper.

I stayed in Porto Colom and (long story) ended up in this hotel:

It's not palatial but quite acceptable in a cheap and cheerful way. You have an apartment rather than a room and then choose whether to go for SC, half or full board. We did half board and either had a snack for lunch or ate out.

It's a quiet resort but what we liked about it (with a then 11year old) is that it has a nice pool and a lovely, family friendly small beach (not one of those massive places like you find on the Costas) a short stroll away.
