On the card left by the new meter the date of exchange would also be on it. By the sound of the letter you had "warning " of a possible warrant its come from Npower. Its not threatening its just detailing what possibly could happen if you would not comply for reasonable access to their property, the meter. No one has issued a warrant as you are insinuating. It just shows that they would ve been getting close to issuing one because you have been ignoring many requests of their legal right of access to their property. You say you have heard negative things about smart meters, did you allow one to be fitted or stick with a normal dumb meter ? They both work accurately.
One thing about smart meters is that they are new and working correctly unlike old analogues which can be running backwards with solar panel use. A new meter , smart or dumb would also record accurately whereas your old meter could well have been under recording.0 -
Interesting ...
We got a new modern one fitted in (whatever they said had to go in ).
Oh yes I see from the sticker install date was 22/12.
So that means the last reading would have been from 9th December to 22nd.? we paid £77 for period up to 8 December (last bill).
Which means in just over ten days we spent £264 .., no way,
Ooh in confused about calculating things out but will try..
Will southern electric give us the benefit of the doubt and accept that perhaps the reading was wrong ? I wish I'd looked at it
Also 26.1p .. What is the usual charge these days ? I don't know why this has gone up by 10p either way
Ps sacquacco, I wasn't insinuating they issued a warrant, but the letter used the words accessing the property with a warrant - which seemed harsh as bills have always been paid0 -
Was your old meter an electric dial meter ? these have six rotating dials and are always getting mis read by meter readers, customers and meter fitters.Meter fitters are more likely to mis read these meters because they won t see that many of them nowadays. I have found exactly the same thing happening with a lady who was billed £700 extra when the meters were exchanged because the dials had fallen on borders. I had to personally phone BG to get her money back and explain two people had misread the meter.
BG certainly was nt giving her the benefit of doubt even though for the past ten years her bills were £150 ish. They were just blindly going on the sayso of a couple of newbies0 -
Oh no!! Yep, the old ones with dials you don't read the last one usually yes?
What do I do now ?0 -

Variable depends upon supplier and tariff .0 -
The last dial, the tenths of a unit, is never read, just first 5 dials. Your old meter is probably still around somewhere languishing in a box at SSEs depot. There is a chance that you also may have been misreading the meters when the dials align on borders.I ve seen it many many times, but also meter fitters could ve been new to the job and they too would get it wrong. SSE may accept your meter was read wrong by your old and future usage averages. The fact that it was a dial meter leads me to think its a reading mess up.
26p a day charge is a little over the average for many suppliers, BG charge 25 p..When you get this sorted its time to get on the comp site and get switching. GB Energy, eg would be much cheaper on SC and tariff0 -
Great advice, i think two guys turned up perhaps one was a trainee. anyway will call them and let you know the outcome, thanks a lot :0)0

well after a 50 min conversation it seems that I underpaid . I explained that I always checked the meter reading to ensure there was never much discrepancy between the bill and my reading - but based on the new meter they calculated and said it worked out the bill was very likely correct so somehow I doubted myself - even though I always checked ?! . Also thru onky had bills going back 2 years... in 8 years bills were never so big.. I mentioned the possibility of digging out the old meter but I never got a reply throughout the chat. They were very professional and sounded genuine, so in the end I accepted the outcome.. still baffled though ... thanks all for your assistance .0
