Store cards as BT???

Evening all

I am in the process of helping my partner resolve her credit file and am looking at a balance transfer card for a Next account and an Argos account. Would a BT cover these or would I be better looking at a 0% spend one? She does not have a credit card currently and according to MSE wonderful soft search tool, has a 95% for a decent BT card and pre-approved for a fairly pointless 0% spend one so big desicion time.

Comments

  • Some store cards are difficult to shift as sometimes the reference number is too long or short.
There is a way round by paying the debt off with a credit card then shifting it to a long term 0% balance transfer card.
I am assuming here that she will be successful in getting a new card and that a 0% card will be fo a longer period than a 0% purchase card.
  • Thanks for the reply

The issue with the 0% spend card is its only 4 months and then a whopping 34.9APR, the BT card is for 32 months - more than long enough to clear it.

Don't think it would be great to take the 0% spend card and then a BT card in 3.5 months time? Isnt that a 'bad' thing for credit building.
by ref number do you mean the card number on the Argos/Next card - it should be 16 digits to fit in with credit cards from what little I know. This is something I will need to check....

Use any old credit card to pay off the balances then transfer that balance onto a long term 0% deal.

That wont work with the Argos card, as you can only use a debit card to pay off the balance

Have you looked at 'money transfer' cards rather than 'balance transfer'?

With money transfer the money is sent to your account and you can pay off the store card with your debit card. I did this to transfer my overdraft to 0% last year.
Total debt at LBM = £4861.03

I've not heard of money transfer cards before.

Looked at 0% spend but rubbish deals for her. Take it from these replies that the balance transfer is unlikely to work on them?

edit: just looked at them, seems like a no-brainer really. Many thanks to posters. will discuss with the boss and post a response here once done
