    Merely overpriced, then?

    I need a new battery charger. I want a CTek MXS5.0

£80 following that link. Let's be charitable and assume that's before the 10%. So £72.

    Amazon's cheapest? £55.

Halfords and Maplins are both only used when they have a 50% off item, even then you can probably get it cheaper but they are convenient.

amazone operate out of big giant warehouses in the middle of nowhere. halfords have lcations in and around cities. People hate on halfords but when you need a jack urgently or something else for emergency you use halfords.

Dont bite the hand that feeds, if halfords goes out of business because evryone buys stuff online it will be another high street service that's removed from us and then you have the motoring section in asda to buy your general car stuff. Great!

Actually, that Amazon price was from a small business selling through Amazon.

My nearest Halfords is a 40-mile round trip. Halfords Group PLC turn over north of a billion quid a year, btw, with £70m annual profit. I think they'll live.

Asda have a "motoring section"? Really? Oh. Well, I wouldn't know, since I wouldn't give Walmart my business if they were the last shop in town.
  • Many other motoring retailers have a high street presence and are a hell of a lot cheaper than Halfords. I would bet that Euro Car Parts and the majority of local motor factors sell their products a lot cheaper than Halfords so your above argument fails. Halfords is also a large national chain which should have massive buying power which would invariably lead to economies of scale. It doesn't seem that this saving is passed onto the end consumer either.

In my town, there used to be two car accessory shops and two proper motor factors. Now there is one small motor factors (in an out-of-the-way location, with poor stock and little choice) and there's Halfords. They get my business for the general stuff, or things I need today rather than next week. I don't get this hate for 'Halfrauds'. It's a business like any other - if you don't like it, don't use it.
