It is a lot colder up North here mind. lol
That was my main thinking. No doubt the much colder temperatures combined with insulation levels make all but the very largest NSH (3.4kW) pointless. I expect even those would need supplemental heat during very cold periods.

No doubt the suppliers were keen to roll out these 'special' to up tariffs because they knew they could charge more money for them. :)
  • This would appear to be a trick i've missed, looking at our previous usage we use about 30% of the total at night.
No storage nor immersion heater, but we do time the dishwasher and washing machine to do their thing at night, and obviously the freezers etc are running overnight.
Not considering an electric car, for reasons other than the price to charge them will increase in line with volume as tax revenues on other fuels drop.

Never even thought of going for a single tariff , must be going gaga.

We have a E7 meter, would we be able to run a single tariff but just give the two figures for totalising if this proved to be to our advantage?

Typically you need to be using upwards of a third on night rate to make it pay, but E7 rates do vary a lot. For most people, this requires NSH's and an immersion heater-but not for all.
Some suppliers will total the two registers, some will not. If not, a meter change will cost you around £60, plus any extra wiring modifications that might be required downstream of the meter, which would be for you to arrange at your expense.
To state the obvious, your freezer is also running during the day, which more than cancels out the saving on night rate for just 7 hours. On E7 you typically pay 3 times more for the 17 peak rate hours.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I have storage heaters/immersion and E7 and worked out based on last years readings that I would actually be slightly better off on a normal tariff (by about £20 for the year). However to move onto a standard tariff I would need a new meter and rewire of certain parts which I would have to pay for myself and last winter was quite mild...

So it really does need to be looked at on an individual basis.
