apprenticeships and government benefits

Hi. My son is leaving uni as it's not working out for him and he wants to take up an apprenticeship. Can anyone tell me what government/council benefits he can receive ? His circumstances: he'll be 21 years of age, on £99 for a 30 hour week, living AWAY from home on a rent of £400 for a room in a shared house plus the usual bill per month.

Obviously his wages would barely pay his rent. I hear that housing benefit is "restricted" for under 25s but I really know that means. I'm trying to understand if this is a realistic option for him.

He will struggle to afford to live away from home on that wage, the only possible benefit available maybe housing benefit but that would probably not cover his entire rent. You need to check your local authority website and find out the rate for shared accommodation, he needs to increase his hours by finding a second job to help pay the bills or live at home and contribute to the household.
Someone else will hopefully be along soon with regards to housing benefit for the under 25's stopping.
