Does anyone else thing that targeting fizzy pop for its sugar content is acceptable cos it is 'chavvy' whereas fruit juices, flavoured milks and sweet coffees are exempt cos they are drunk by the middle classes?
He said it was 'for the children' and they love a fizzy drink over a Starbucks. Plenty of lunch boxes with yogurt drinks and fruit juice though so it's not entirely logical.0 -
Within reason the body self regulates but there are limits. If I consume 500 calories a day more than I need I'll gain weight but eventually flatline not because the body has decided enough is enough but because I've reached a weight where those calories are needed to maintain the weight gained.
It's the same in reverse. If you lose weight and consume the same eventually the weight loss will tail off because your BMR is a function of weight.
The point i was making is that you cant easily overconsume or underconsume the body regulates itself
If you eat a small breakfast you are likely to eat a bigger lunch
If you eat a big breakfast you are likely to eat a smaller lunch
If you do lots of activity you are likely to eat more
If you do little activity you are likely to eat less
in its simplest form lets say you only eat when you are physically hungry. well eating a 1200 calories meal means you will feel hungry 10-12 hours later. Eating a 400 calories meal means you will feel hungry in about 4 hours
So once again we all have an inbuilt calorie counter, both taken in an out, and for most people that calorie counter is quite good it maintains their weight. Its why lots of people do not diet do not exercise and maintian a weight 3-5 kg around their norm.
For me that is about 72kg plus or minus 3kg no matter what I eat good or bad sugar or fat.0 -
However their is the issue that just because your bmi is not high doesn't mean you are healthy. Through an intensive and long running programme of inaction I have converted almost all the muscle in my body to fat, I have gained about a stone in weight but my bmi remains safely in the healthy category but I am far from being physically healthy.
Where as i am a towering temple of rock hard muscle

Most people who train regularly know how unfit 'average' people are, and how comparatively fit that they are, at the moment I am well below my best (I'm working on it, it is mainly due to injuries) but my fitness level is way above that of the average man in the street for my age. Which is quite comforting because we have just had to deal with a family bereavement, and the fragility of life has once again been highlighted to me.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

I think you well know that it it is a real issue. Not just just health wise (which is extremely important) but also for the economy,Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

I agree that obesity is a real issue, both the economic and human cost.
Picking one item seems rather arbitrary to me and cynically one might think it had been put in to the budget to distract people from other issues.0 -

Well there are the regressive changes to income tax bands and capital gains tax but as many of us probably benefit we are keeping quiet.
I don't know why all the schools weren't made academies ages ago by labour let alone the tories. Not sure how I feel about it - is by the school localism better or worse than by the la localism?
Disability payments? I don't understand the issues, I have a slight feeling that perhaps they should be more means tested? Is there a much higher proI think....0 -
Personally I don't think the chancellor should be cutting taxes for the better off at a time of austerity when the books don't balance.
I will save £80 a year which won't make any difference to me personally or the vast majority of people who are on middle or higher incomes, but could collectively do some good for society where there is greater need. £6.70 per month would buy about 2 coffees a month. I'd rather they only did tax cuts for the low paid.0
