The (extortionate) cost of holidaying alone

I've never been on holiday alone before but would like to do this as many of my friends' budget varies and also we don't always want to go to the same places.

I knew going alone was usually a bit more expensive than going with a mate but seriously the cost when doing comparisons were ridiculous.

I have found that in general booking flights and hotel together was cheaper than doing it separate no matter how many nights.

I'm not willing to stay in hostels or anywhere that isn't a en-suite hotel room.

Anyone know why going alone is more expensive? I can't see what difference it makes to the hotel or airline and any tips to reduce the cost of solo holiday?

Double hotel room with en suite is 100 Euro per night, that's 50 Euro per person if two people travel.

Single hotel room with en suite is 85 Euro per night, that's 85 Euro per person if one person travels.

Ryanair currently have very cheap flights to Copenhagen from £9.99, at that price who cares about sharing the cost of a hotel room with any body.

It's not that it's more expensive, it's just that you have no one to split the cost with.

The price of a double hotel room remains the same regardless of whether there are 1 or 2 people in there.

When booking your hotel, by all means try the agent sites like hotels.com or trivago etc but when you find one you like remember to go onto the hotel's own website because sometimes there are deals to be had that don't get picked up by the agents. Especially out of season.

I'd be most aggrieved to find a body in my hotel room :rotfl:

While you technically can get flights for a tenner, they are usually at silly times and with hand luggage only.

What's the point of arriving at 6am when you can not check in until (usually) 3pm? And the things I need for a week or so will not fit into hand luggage only.

Having said that though, I've never had to strictly conform to the hand luggage size by way of putting it into the box they have at airport desks so perhaps I can get away with something slightly bigger.

While I don't see what any of this has to do with holidaying alone, I hardly see how you can complain that budget airlines don't tailor their services around you personally...

There are numerous points for arriving at 6am (though you'd struggle to find many budget flights that arrive quite that early). The two points relevant to me are that it gives me an entire day at the destination and it's (sometimes) cheaper. I have no desire to go to sleep at 3pm (though many would allow you to check-in earlier) and hotels will store bags before check-in.

All the things you need for a week will indeed fit in hand luggage, all the things you want may not, but that's your problem!

Sounds like you need a private jet. It will cost you more than £10 but at least you'll be able to check into your room straightaway ;)

It would prove very costly to take a larger bag and then get stopped at the airport. Far better just to pack more efficiently in the first place.
  • Until you've paid for 2 or more kids to come on holiday with you also, don't moan about the price.

Nowt wrong with having a moan, I thought that's what this board was for? ;)

I have been on holiday with a kid. Well, she's a kid to me but in the eyes of they airline and hotel she is an adult coz she is 13. Going out in general (off topic I know) I paid full adult price for my then 6/7 year old niece to go theatre. Their reason being is you pay for the seat regardless of the age of the person sitting in it.

You see I do expect a single room to be around 60-65 euros but 85 for half of a double is really expensive considering I'd be using less utilities too.

Utilities costs pennies, but a single room will take just about as long to clean/restock as a double room - probably one of the largest expenses. Also, in terms of room size, it's not much different either.

Would you expect a discount buying a flat, dependant on the number of people who were going to live there?
