Are my credit card charges reclaimable?

Hello all,
I have a query on some charges made on my credit card from a number of years ago.
When I left to join university in 2000, I signed up for a student account with HSBC. Part of the account gave me a credit card. When in branch signing up I was asked whether I would like to pay £5 per month to protect the card. This charge went towards replacing the cards in the event of loss or theft.
I can't find anything online to suggest that this is PPI (which seems to cover payments in the event of loss of earning - forgive me if my interpretation is wrong). It's just that this appears to be a charge for something which should be offered by a bank as a free service anyway.
Also, to complicate matters I closed this account about 10 years ago and have no evidence to back up claims.
Can I get anyone's thoughts on whether it is worth pursuing?
Best Regards
Rob

And there is a CPP redress scheme. But the deadline has passed.

Thanks for your responses.
I see that this redress scheme was for post-2005 claims. Does anyone know whether pre-2005 claims are also past the deadline?0 -
For pre-2005 claims you have to complain to whoever sold you the insurance, in your case HSBC.
However, as you say the account was closed a decade ago, the chances of there still being any record of you paying this are nil.
Unless you can find some documentary evidence from your own archive, I suspect you'll find pursuit of this a futile exercise.
You have nothing to lose by trying, of course.0 -
Thank you all. I might as well try. As they say, it never hurts to ask!0
