Windows 10 shut down

Why does Windows 10 take much longer to shut down than Windows 7 & 8?

If you're not worried about a fast startup and (for reasons unknown) want a faster shut down, you can disable "fast startup" in the Power Options.

My experience is that Fast Startup is a faster shutdown as well, although it probably depends on specifics of your machine.

Plus Fast Startup is also in Windows 8, so going to 10 shouldn't have changed that part.

    I haven't noticed any difference.

What I did notice early after installing Win 10 on a new-to-me machine is that it wouldn't go through the automatic restart it does after updates are installed but just hung forever shutting down forcing me to eventually power cycle it. After some research I fixed that with a BIOS update (no idea why that was needed). There were some suggestions about turning off fast start too but that made no difference to my own issue.

If the delay really is overly long it may be worth checking for a BIOS update but if you are just talking a minute or so why does it matter?

It doesn't, for me, on 2 computers.
It DOES install updates when shutting down, and this would take some time...

It shuts down and boots faster than W7/8 on the machines I have access to. One takes the same time as a W7 machine I have. I guess it depends as well on what you have installed that is taking time to shut before power down.
To be honest I had to sit and watch each one to test it for you. I've never watched them shut down, I finish with them as soon as the power button is hit...;):)
