Burglar alarm / deaf person

Hi,

I want to have a burglar alarm fitted but I'm clueless. At the moment I have a security light but the sensor keeps moving. I fell out with a neighbour and thought they was doing it to rattle me but there has been a spare of burglaries recently so I'm now panicking.

I'm deaf, I wear hearing aids but can't have them in when I go to sleep. I have a little dog that aids me and will bark if anyone is around but I won't hear him at night. I'm on my own with 2 kids, they will hear the dog but for the first time in my life I feel vulnerable.

I don't know whether I'd hear an alarm, I have special fire alarms that vibrate but not sure of house alarms have these?

Is there a 'better' alarm to get. Do I need one that must be wired in?

Thanks in advance

I've just bought a "smart" alarm. Its completely wirefree, has motion sensors etc and the option to purchase a siren separately but you can just have the alarm alert your phone if for example a door was opened or the motion sensor was activated and you could set your notifications to vibrate rather than audio alert you?

You can also get it to turn on a bedroom lamp for example if it were to sense an open door or motion sensor perhaps that might be of use?

I know, back in the late '90s, alarms could be hard-wired into the lighting circuit so most house lights could flash. They can also trigger vibrating pads for beds or, more simply, message a mobile phone or bleeper that can be set to vibrate.

I don't have up-to-date links, unfortunately, but they do certainly exist.

Edit: your local PCSO is likely to be trained in advising on this, and other matters that might be useful to you...

The light option would be better. I don't feel my phone vibrate at night. Was it an expensive thing?

I've emailed a company and they came back that I should have:

"three detection devices, control system with battery back up, keypad in kitchen, external siren/strobe in tamperproof case with logo, internal sounder, mains spur connection all necessary wiring, programming and labour £390 with a two year guarantee"

They said the kids would wake up if the alarm went off anyway and would notify me. They're also bringing an alarm to "set off" to see if I would hear it

Not sure if this is a good cost?
  • There are a number of systems for deaf hard of hearing some pager linked most domestic would be siren, strobe, vibration pad etc materials £25 -£150, Installation is pretty easy within most peoples diy level....
Not recommending company per say just as an aide in deciding what’s most suitable for your needs then just google to find better prices

The starter kit is £199 (although I have seen them online much cheaper but im impatient so popped down to pc world that day lol) and it comes with the hub which is the brains of the alarm, a smart plug (which allows you to turn it on/off remotely or have the hub turn it on/off whenever something happens like a motion sensor being activated/door sensor being opened), door/window sensor and a presence sensor (keyfob which knows you have arrived back home and turns off the alarm without you having to do anything)

its very expandable so you can add as many plugs, sensors, door sensors etc etc as you want. It is also compatible with some wireless lightbulbs, cameras, flood sensors, sirens etc etc
With the sirens you can plug them into any plug socket so you could have it right next to your bed if you want - the audio is 110DB on the siren that I have.

I love mine, I only bought it because its the only one I could find that rings/alerts your phone if theres something happening and you aren't there as I'm out of the house for long periods of time.
