It looks like I will be going back to avast! (with some features disabled) I've never paid for an anti-virus and never had any problems, so have no intention of paying for it now.
I've never really go on with windows defender. I want an AV that allows me to scan any files I download.
Does anyone else know about Smadav?
Search the forum looking for comments, I would guess you won't find many

Zone alarm used to be good, but then it got sold to an Israli company and the whole package bloated in size without any increase in functionality. Very suspicious indeed...........

I would rather have no AV or FW than use McAfee never mind pay for it even if it was pennies.

I have had to recover an infected machine so many times because the user kept reinstalling McAfee.. I had a falling out with them and wont touch their computer now.

I've used Comodo Internet Security Premium for years and currently use it on two desktops and two Laptops.
I don't find it bloated at all. It's free of course.

Works for me both as a Firewall and an AV.

ZoneAlarm was also a nightmare regarding false positives. I had to completely uninstall it to have any chance of being able to properly test software.

It was great when I started using it in the Windows 98 to early XP era, though...

    'Free' AV's are inadequate...

What makes you say that? Don't all AVs protect you from 100% of known "in the wild" viruses...? The additional protection afforded by "premium" AVs isn't worth it, in my opinion.

In twenty years of running anti-viruses, the worst that's ever happened on my PC is the installation of a dodgy browser toolbar. I really don't know how people manage to install malware these days... unless they're neglecting to update Windows and security software.

Use common-sense and some basic anti-malware apps and a free AV should be more than adequate.
