Carpet replacement - expensive?

I've had a local guy in to quote for carpet replacements in the bedrooms and I'm thinking that the quote is on the expensive side but just wanted to check!
Both rooms are about 25m2 in total (one completely empty, the other has a cot and small wardrobe).
uplift and dispose - £60
underlay - £78
grippers - £24
doorbars - £14.50
fitting - £156
plus of course cost of carpet at £296
What do you think?

Most shops pay fitters £2.50 a m2 and they are lucky to get that.
He also has 100% mark up on underlay, plates and a whole box of gripper is £19 trade.I do Contracts, all day every day.0 -
Thank you - my main thing was the fitting cost which is massive for what will probably only be an hour or two's work.0

Well you could save 60 by uplifting and removing the carpet yourself. It is a little on the high side.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

having done up two houses in the past 4 years i normally do as much as poss myself
dispose of carpet yourself a the local tip
install the grippers yourself - its easy, have a look at a few youtube videos
Good underlay online starts from £1.50 sqm, i normally fit it using a heavy duty staple gun
could save yourself £80/90 on the above i reckonNamed after my cat, picture coming shortly0 -

It's remarkable. People that never do these jobs are always keen to tell tradesmen how long it should take. Laying grippers and underlay plus carpets is a mornings work for a fitter and labourer.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
Get a second quote from a recommended local supplier.
I have been using the same local carpet supplier/fitter for the last 20 years after him being recommended to me by a friend.
I first went to him after getting a quote from HOF for a bedroom carpet that was almost £800. He looked at my sample and provided me with a similar quality carpet for under £500 fitted.
He can usually supply and fit a carpet within days if required as he truly values customers and works hours that suit customers.
I've recommended him to friends who have been equally impressed. He doesn't have a fancy show room and you have to ring him to get samples as they are usually out fitting but he'll drop samples off if you can't get to shop and doesn't limit you to a couple of samples or charge you for privilege.
He doesn't provide a price breakdown to your level. He just tells you cost of carpet and fitting. He doesn't over sell either.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

Thank you to everyone whose replied. Ive got another local company coming tomorrow to quote. We had already discussed disposing of carpets ourselves to save £60 - in the empty room it has already been cut round the edges (off the grippers) by the decorator so he could do a good job of the skirting so should be easy. Im thinking laying grippers etc might be a little adventurous at 35 weeks pregnant, I can barely tie my shoes :-)0

Surely use your partner and get him to buy you some slip ons.
Or wait until after the baby is born!
Best of luck with your baby.0 -
If you're lifting the old carpet, will the gripper not already be there?0
