reccomendations for cheap europe holiday

I want to take my daughter away at the end of june after her gcses have finished but don't know where to go. I am on medication for rheumatoid arthritis which can make me more prone to skin cancer and need total block when in the sun so although I like the heat think its best not to go somewhere too hot. I figured somewhere in Europe would be best but don't know where to go. we want something fairly cheap. any suggestions will be be appreciated

If you want to keep out of the heat, you need to consider going north rather than south, Spain Portugal Greece etc will be up in the high 20's to high 30's by then. Denmark is probably the cheapest of the Scandinavian countries, also Finland, perhaps a cottage around one of the many lakes. Although I love Norway it will fail your 'cheap' requirements by some way alas. Of course your idea of 'cheap' may not be other peoples. so perhaps an indication of how much, or little you would like to spend may help people with other suggestions.

I am assuming you plan to go at the beginning of July and not wait until the start of the school holidays three weeks later when everything will be twice the price?

Will it just be you and your daughter?

What sort of things do you want to do on this holiday?

    How many nights?

If you're looking for a beach holiday (and of course, you may not be), there are fabulous beaches all along the northern coastline of France and Belgium which are easily accessible from the UK, with or without a car..

Also Northeren France doesn't tend to get very hot even in the height of Summer, something that was important to the OP.

I was recently looking at Brittany Ferries prices for end of June/ start of July, to get an idea of prices for next year. It was £560 Plymouth to Roscoff cabins included both ways. I thought that was really reasonable.
Need more info from the OP though regarding budget and number of nights that she wants to go away for.

The shorter crossings are usually much cheaper than this (from £110 return, car and 2 passengers) and there are fantastic beaches within an hour's drive of Calais and Boulogne.

In fact, fabulous beaches all the way along the Channel coast.

UV levels are not related to temperature.
The closer you travel towards the Equator the higher the levels will be.

e.g. On a clear August day in Madrid with it's very high temperatures, the UV levels will be lower than the Canaries even though the temperature will probably be lower.
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

You could consider a cruise to the Norwegian fjords. They are usually 7 days, all your food, accommodation and entertainment is included, and you can get them on P&O for under £500 each. They visit some amazing places. We did one last year to Bergen, Olden, Flam & Stavanger, which is a mix of interesting cities and spectacular scenery which you would not find in the UK.

  • Latvia is lovely in Summer. Jurmala, just outside of Riga, is gorgeous and a short, cheap train ride away from the city centre.

We've been twice in August, once as a day trip from Riga, and once for a week with our son. I'd love to go back with our younger son!

We stayed in the Majori / Dzintari area, which has a lovely beach and a forest park. The weather was warm and sunny, and the Baltic not as cold as we expected it to be! We paid around £600 for 3 people for 6 nights :)

Another place on my To Go list, is Gdansk / Sopot in Poland, which would probably be cheaper than Latvia when you get there :)
