House rewiring..what are my options?

I am moving this weekend to a house which needs complete renovation (although livable in its current condition). I am looking to start with rewiring the house (it is 100 years old and has not been rewired, at least, in the last 30 years). I have 3 children and looking to do the work while living in the house. Is it possible to do the rewiring while living in the house? How long will it take and how much is the rough cost? it is 5 bed house in the west midlands

Where I live, a ball park figure to re-wire a 5 bed house with potential to upgrade all round, especially the kitchen, would be in the region of £4.5 - 5k.

If you are just renovating and not making structural alterations, it's easier, but if you plan to move walls, change room functions etc, then work can be staged to allow for this.

My advice is to live in the house for a while so that you have a very good idea of how furniture will be placed and exactly what changes you intend to make. Rushing can easily lead to power points/switches in the wrong places etc.

You can live in a house while it's rewired, but expect dust and damage to plaster work etc. As loft hatches and floors etc will be opened-up, I wouldn't do it in the depths of winter.
