Can my work make me do this?

You end up with bottom level staff on the same pay grades as intermediate staff with more responsibilities, so everyone's wage has to go up by the same percentage.
.
To add to that, because these things are always done by percentages, the higher up the pay scale you are the bigger the rise in real terms, which means if you are at the bottom you may initially feel better off but in reality you get poorer in relation to the general working population.0 -
With regards to FLT it is a bendi truck but we don't get the certificate and it is not transferable to other employers as far as I'm aware
My son was told by the company training him on the FLT that if he needed a copy of his certificate he could contact them and they'd provide it for £25.
That said, I personally think you should stop bleating. You've been trained on the FLT at no personal expense. It's a useful skill. Use the truck often, get experienced, work hard and try and achieve a pay rise through merit.
Or, leave and find another company that will be a better fit for you.0 -

That's what I did by taking on the extra responsibility, however this has now been withdrawn by the company.0 -

Can I check my understanding of the situation? You were offered the opportunity to get your FLT licence and become a driver. In addition to getting your licence, they'd pay an extra 25p per hour.
Shortly after this happened NMW was increased by 25p for everyone to the pay level you're currently one. So your complaint is that you are on the same pay level as everyone else but are being asked to drive the FLT?0 -

Correct, the company paid a financial incentive for people who were willing to take on FLT driving responsibilities on top of their original contract0 -
This is happening at many companies including the one I work for. I have 2 ladies on our department who were taken on at the outset of the company on a shift which included unsocial hours supplements and weekend premiums. Therefore they were on a lot better pay than others taken on later. As time has gone contracts have changed and they no longer give the additional supplement contracts so the few people still on them have been clinging onto them and basically enjoying the fact they are on a lot more money than others doing the same job.
However they have now discovered that everyone else's wage will increase to the same level as theirs and are now annoyed that everyone else is getting a pay rise whilst they will not.
Swings and roundabouts I guess.0 -
Also just to add, at our place there is no extra supplement offered for taking on a driving role and the responsibility it entails at all. When queried with the manager the reply was that by training someone in a driving position they are in fact enhancing the persons CV so extra payment is not required, they want people wanting to improve themselves, not improve their wage!0

I don't really see the problem. I previously worked in a DIY store and was fork lift trained (diesel counter balance and electric reach) and I would much rather be driving one than doing most of the other tasks required no matter what the rate of pay was. I spent as much time in the drivers seat as I could!0

Your experience solidifies the case for no wage elevation for FLT licence holders to employers. I suspect there are enough who like FLT task such that raising wages for it would be wholly unnecessary.0 -
