Can't reinstall Opera Mini on a Gingerbread phone

I had to borrow my only Android phone's SD card for something that required it to be formatted. When I returned it to the phone I found the stock browser won't go to https://www.m.opera.com because it just adjusts the URL to the desktop site (i.e. the opposite of the usual problem when having to use a phone instead of a lap/desktop!). I can't even find out if Opera still offer it (for Android 2.3.6) and I don't want to risk downloading it from a 3rd party site as a I occasionally do banking on it.
Going via Google Play, I am informed that my device is too old for the current offering from Opera.

Can you not put a more recent version of Android on the phone that Opera will work with? Gingerbread is a very ancient version, and to be honest if it's the best your phone will allow you're probably better off getting a newer phone.

There should always be a stock browser on the ROM.
