Do npower read meters for other suppliers?

I've just had a call from my wife, who tells me that npower have been round to read our meters. Only thing is that we're not with npower (we're in mid-switch from EDF Energy to BG at the moment).

Do npower read meters for other suppliers or is it the case that the meter reading is done on behalf of energy suppliers by a third party, who presumably just chuck a random uniform on in the morning.

I am concerned that this might be criminal activity (casing the joint) but don't want to panic.

I don't know specifically about NPower but sometimes my meter (British Gas) is read by a lady from a third-party company. I'm almost certain that she isn't from NPower but she does seem to wear a uniform of some type.
I would suggest that it would be worth telephoning your supplier to see if they have authorised this meter reading?

Npower use their own meter readers or sometimes they may use Meter Plus who are owned by Npower. They use another company also , I think for "must reads " called Lowri Beck.
EDF and BG and Scot Power/Eon use G4S Utilities who I work for. They sub contract a lot of work nowadays to agencies. I ve just found out that G4S Utilities is up for sale next year ..

NPower are listed in the Association of Meter Operators as providing meter reading services and also own MeterPlus.

Thanks for your post.

With regards to npower, we should only read meters for customers we supply, unless there's a genuine reason to check (suspected crossed metering etc).

I'm always happy to check with our Metering team to see if there was a designated meter agent in your area at that time if you can contact me using the details on our profile page. Please include your address and as much information as you can, as this will help identify the agent if needed, as well as marking the email subject as MSE.
