Insurance repairs - how long is a reasonable time?

I'm struggling to understand this. You work 2 to 10 and would have to get up 5 hours early for the repairs. I work 9-5 but am up about 6am and go to bed about midnight.

Couldn't you just get up at 8am and go to bed after work? Still gives you 8 hours plus in bed.

OK let's turn this on its head. Something happens which means your routine is disrupted. You now have to get up at 1am, but still go to work 9-5. You can then just sleep 6pm-1am, right? Would you be happy with that kind of disruption to your ordinary routine?

Not happy but I would do it. I have suggested seeking a compromise such as you getting up two hours early not 5 hours early.

You need to find a solution, not problems.
  • I have been trying to do that for months. I mentioned your suggested compromise the last time builders were here, they looked at me blankly then explained that's just the time they work, and they like to finish at 3-4 to avoid rush hour as they came in from miles away.

One problem is the insurance's approved contractor is sub contracting left right and centre (these were self employed guys given one day to do a 2 day job, as they said to me, they were given 1 day to strip 2 rooms and it turned out there were 5 layers just in one room which took all day). I haven't been offered a date since to do the rest of stripping. That sort of problem isn't one I'm creating. I've offered to take a week off work altogether, to get as much done as possible, but then no dates are forthcoming.

So yes, I'm trying my best to find solutions that work, but this needs some cooperation from the contractor as opposed to not returning my calls/emails etc?

After a fire, the insurance repairs took 2 years from start to finish. A lot of weeks/months went by with nothing happening due to the 'claims management company' not talking to the insurer and contractors, and contractors going off and doing different jobs.

I'm afraid you have to ring up all parties regularly to make sure they are all singing from the same song sheet. They certainly like being given the keys and told to get on with it but don't like working around the householder being there. The one time we did move out for a week, we came back and found they had made alterations that we never agreed and were not to our liking; complete nightmare but they did put it back as we wanted in the end.
  • I really appreciate all the replies.

I am pleased to say that Halifax have agreed to my proposal to stay somewhere else when works are happening, the upside is that I can go to work as normal but will also be able to pop back if absolutely necessary at night, to check things are going as planned.

Credit where credit's due to my personal claims consultant for being very helpful about this.

I think the issue was I was trying to deal with the contractors myself and they seem inundated with work - now I'm copying Halifax into everything things seem to be moving quicker. I've never had to do this before so it's all been quite challenging but hopefully the delays (whether caused by my unconventional schedule or the contractors or a mix of both) can now be sorted as I have an option.

Good result. Pity he didn't say yes yesterday instead of no.
  • True but shows persistence helps as Tsx said earlier in the thread!
