Wireless remote light switches

Hi

I have an issue with the lights in my hallway. The downstairs light switch (for both floors) is not located next to the front door. I'd like to add an additional light switch so that I can turn the downstairs hallway lights on as I enter the house. I don't want to start chasing out walls (that will open up a can of worms) so wondered if there were any products where I can replace the existing socket with a wireless receiver (that still has switches) and than add an additional wireless slave switch near the door (with a conventional plate.....I don't want a remote which I will lose).

I've seen a few products, but they look very complicated. I just need a simple retrofit solution rather than some space age bells and whistles nonsense).

Thanks.

There are a few ways you can do this, but probably best thing is an 'all in one' product package rather than trying to mix and match.

Philips Hue offer a good range of stuff that link together. White bulbs are fairly cheap (about £15), and the hub is fairly easy to use with your phone. They also do a remote light switch unit.

Another option is LightwaveRF products. They offer some very nice retro fit light switch units, but again you will need a hub.

Either which way, its not overly cheap and most require some sort of internet connection and phone app setup initially.

Fit a simple PIR so it comes on automatically. Get a daylight sensor as well if you don't want it on in the day. But if you use LED bulbs the cost of running these is minimal.

Ditto for mx5huggy's comment. PIR/occupancy sensor is the way forward.

  • LightwaveRF will do the job easily though not the cheapest option. As long as the back box is deep enough you can replace the existing switch with a LightwaveRF dimmer switch and pair it up with a second wireless switch next to the door.

Thanks everyone. Will see how I get on with a light sensitive PIR bulb first, though the Lightwave looks like it might do the job at a reasonable cost (compared the the messy wired alternative). Backbox is only 25 mm, but chiseling out a bit more is less of an issue than chasing out a new channel.

I used to have a remote light switch in the bedroom. It was also a dimmer. Looked like this one and we linked it up to the tv remote to control it. May or may not be helpful but just another idea. There seem to be loads of google results when I was searching, with many different remote light switched available. I imagine you could get one to work with an iPhone these days too :)

LightwaveRF. I'm a big fan and ended up replacing all my switches. Now I have a button by the door that switches off every light in the house
