How do I 'switch off' iphone abroad?
I'm wanting to take my iphone on holiday to the Carribean, but only to listen to music and play apps.
I have a contract so I'm worried about coming back to a huge phone bill! I wont use the 'phone' whatsoever. Can I take the sim out? Do I keep the phone in airplane mode? Sorry, this is my first iphone and I'm clueless on how to use it properly. Thank you.

Just take the sim out. Then there's no chance of you getting a big bill.
You could leave it in airplane mode and still connect to any available wifi but then there's room for error.
With no sim in the phone there's absolutely zero way you can accidentally run up a big bill.Sigless0 -

When you switch off an iPhone and turn it back on again, firstly it asks for your phone log-on (you have set a PIN or password, haven't you?), then it asks for a SIM PIN. If you cancel rather than entering a SIM PIN, it can't work on the GSM network, so no chance of any charges. The phone should work in all other respects. You can try it at home before you travel.
It's obviously not possible to accidentally enter a SIM PIN and from memory you aren't asked again until you power off/on. The phone will work in other respects, so WiFi should be fine.0 -
You are right to be worried about massive phone bills. There are plenty of reports of phone bills that cost more than the holiday.0
