Broken door. Does warranty cover repairs?

Dear all,

We spent around £2000 in a brand new set of french doors for our extension. The lock and debar mechanism broke down the first day and the seller sent me a replacement that he reassure it was much better than the original. The only problem is that the size of the new mechanism is slightly bigger and it needs to be fitted by someone with the right tools. He asked me to do it myself as it was "easy than it looks" but i do not have the right tools. He is saying that the warranty covers only parts but not paying a locksmith for the repair. Is he right?

  • The goods supplied should be fit for purpose. They obviously weren't as he's supplied a new locking mechanism. Without seeing the warranty no one knows what it says. If he won't fix it send him a letter before action and then get someone in and claim the costs back via the small claims court.

Did you buy the doors direct from the manufacturer or did the installation company get them?

I got the doors from a company in ebay. I had two builders installing the doors but the lock and debar mechanism was already installed

Have you contacted the ebay company? You contract for the doors is with them although the manufacturer may well become involved if asked. I would urge the manufacturer to repair their door as it was not fit for purpose when supplied.
