Stopping a valid CC

omits
omits Posts: 100 Forumite
I have an online account which contains my CC details. Due to this type of account one cannot delete the card from it without putting in a new valid card details. SO, I want to make the card invalid so that if that account somehow decides to charge my card for something I have not purchased (OK, it COULD happen!) and I have no intention of purchasing. My thoughts are:

1. wait for the card to expire and just ignore requests to renew. But I do not want to wait 18 months for that to happen as something could happen meanwhile.

2. report the card lost and get a new card. BUT, charges against the account may subsequently get through on the basis of the old card. Is this true?

3. Close the CC account. Will this actually stop charges getting through later?

Any advice appreciated especially if you have done this yourself. Thanks.

Thanks for your time.

None will stop them from "somehow" charging your card for "something", at least during the next 6 months. However, your are protected from unauthorised transactions. Stop being paranoid. For the majority of us dozens of companies store our cards' details.

You CAN instruct your bank to stop continious authority payments on the card but whether an ad hoc shop counts as this may be subject to a ruling.

You could close the online account with the retailer and re open one when or if you want to purchase from them in future.

As jones suggests, your best option is 4, close the online account. 1 and 2 are unlikely to work, and 3 would be an inconvenience to you if it's a card that you still wish to use. Should you want to buy from the online source in future perhaps a prepaid card that has no money on it except for specific amounts at the time you make the purchase would be a better solution for you, although I have to agree with grumbler that you sound ridiculously paranoid about it.
