Finding the master socket for BT

I was meant to be getting Infinity broadband on Friday however since being told everything's working by BT, the internet still isn't working on the HH5. After getting on to their technical team, they have asked me to locate the master socket which after a bit of research and messing around I think I have found but have no way to be sure as the wiring in the flat is quite old. I have taken pictures of what I think it is:

Is the one I think the master socket is as it has somehting going across the C1 section.

This is the face plate:

And this is what the other two sockets look like:

My question is, as I have a dial tone on the phone, is the fault with my sockets as they're fairly old? Or is it something beyond my control so I don't have to pay the £130 fee?

Sorry for the images as they don't seem to want to work using the image function on here.

Can you follow the phone line entering the house? Master socket should be the first one inside.

Can't see it at all. There's no telephone pole nearby. That first socket I posted a picture of was the only one that was different from the others which makes me think that it's the master however there's no way to be sure. It's by the fuse box as well so might be more likely to be the master.

I have looked high and low for any other sockets but can't see any others at all.

the first picture you posted is a master socket plate , its the only one with a capacitor and the label on it in your picture has LJU2/1A on it

    LJU2/1A

the line is connected to terminals 2 and 5 , you may also have a redundant (no longer needed) green and white bell wire connected

There must be a cable coming into the house somewhere, ours is run round the side and back of the house high up on the wall and then comes into the house through the wall in the upstairs back bedroom (stems from the time my son lived here and had the wifi direct to his bedroom) and we never changed it.

  • @Browntoa - Thanks. I tried putting just the HH5 in there however it still didn't work. Would this suggest a problem at the cabinet then?

@Tanith - I'll take another look as I'm out at the moment. It's a block of flats so there's quite a few wires everywhere. There was a chunk of wires going in to what might be my bathroom so I'll look at those as there's a random box in the corner of the bathroom but there's nothing else I could see on the external walls.

I assume you are getting dial tone ??

there is additional jumpering in the exchange that needs doing to separately connect the broadband part ,

make a note of all other connected wires to the socket apart from 2 and five and remove them and see if it works . Then reconnect them to reconnect your extensions ( a small screwdriver will push them back in ;) )

  • Yeah getting a dial tone and cn make calls in and out.

What would messing with the wires do? Surely if my Plusnet broadband worked alright before, no reason to suggest that BT's fibre optic shouldn't work alright to as it's FTTC and not FTTP so would have to come down the existing phone lines from the cabinet to the premises?
  • Just taken a good long look at the building and as far as I can see, there are two sets of wires going in. One is the TV/Aerial cable and the other is this:

I'm in the 1st floor flat and there's no socket on that corner of the building. However, checking the electrical cupboard by the front door to the flat is this:

Which looks like telecommunications cables going in to the flat and to the socket by the front door:

Having checked every wall of the flat internal and external, I can't see any more sockets which again would support the theory that that socket is the master.

There was also this box which i'm not sure what it does but doesn't seem related to the phone cable:

While I was there, I tried the HH5 again, with the filter and without and there's a dial tone but no internet connection. To me, it looks like it's probably something wrong at the cabinet but I am obviously open to opinions!
