I've also had the drama about how to split a bill at a restaurant... Quite recently as well!
A couple of months ago, my work went out for a meal together. I drove, so had a starter, main and one soft drink. Others had 3 courses and multiple bottles of wine, plus cocktails.
At the end of the meal, a message filtered down the table that everyone owed £30. I think not! I sent a £20 back up the table with the message that I hadn't drunk any alcohol, nor had a starter - and therefore would be paying £20.
OOOOH! The looks that were sent my way from some at the other end of the table were a sight to behold. Clearly they were most annoyed that I wasn't going to fund their binge! However, then my actions gave others some courage, and other non-drinkers, of which there were a few, only gave in £20. Which meant those drinkers had to actually pay for what they'd had!!
I've always felt that why should they have ALL the courses and ALL the drink AND get a cheap night out? Whereas others in the party have LESS food, NO drink AND have to pay for a lot more than what they had? Always seems like a bit of a slap in the face!
However, I've found, that when you explain it to people like that, they do understand. And if they still don't like it... Well, they weren't your friends anyway.Because it's fun to have money!

Hubby and I went to a friend's birthday party. We wrapped up a prize thAt we had won on a raffle for the friend. (It was a bottle alcohol).
Oh, I re-gift wine all the time. In my job at a school, I get given multiple bottles of wine a year. I don't mind wine, but I only maybe get through one or two bottles of year. I'm just not a big drinker.
So I end up with a surplus in my house, often of really nice stuff as well.
So when I'm invited round for dinner at someone else's house, it's a good chance to get rid of a spare bottle, and look very generous at the same time!! :rotfl:Because it's fun to have money!

Alcohol is a bit of a game-changer in these things isn't it. I still recall (not that I'm bitter, you understand! ) the evening at a '£12.99 all you can eat buffet' for someone's birthday where my share of the bill - for said buffet and a Coke - came to £25.
I don't mind sharing the cost of starters, bread etc especially as if I'm with friends we'll often share food or swap dishes, but alcohol significantly increases the bill. As I'm usually the person driving, I then have to put up with extensive and emotional farewells before we can leave, and rambling and incoherent conversation on the way home!Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. I feel like maybe this qualifies... when i find empty sweet bags in the street that have codes on that I'm collecting for free cinema tickets, I nab the litter and take it home. I then claim the code and bin the rubbish. Way I see it, I benefit and the local area has a little less litter. On the up
