When I've watched Extreme Cheapskates on tv, some of the things they did were a bit crazy, and I couldn't see the point, like washing kitchen paper, not much saving there! :o
They did the roadkill dinner. and doggy bagging other people left-overs at restaurants.:rotfl: I found it tongue in cheek but entertaining.
You can live frugally without doing without, so some of the 'extreme' measures, for me, is too extreme! :D

I thought people who obtained things at other people's expense were called moochers!

Doggy bagging other peoples left overs! Well, it really would depend on what it was going to be used for. If it was for an animal, that would be okay, but I'd personally not be eating any leftovers from anyone else's dinner plate. Animals won't do well with my veggie leftovers, but admit that I have bagged left over meat and chicken scraps from my kitchen, and used to knick the leftovers of hubby's steak at restaurants for our furry four legged friends.

Can quite see where you are coming from with moochers, same as cadgers? To me, they are people who are always looking for something for nothing, but you know that by their attitude/speech that they are on the look out for something, and usually for nothing or for very little. You just have to mention that you want to get rid of something, and they will take it off your hands.

A cheapskate to me is a bit different, in that they are sneaky, and quite usually, experts in evading paying for things at others expense. Example...few people out for drinks, the cheapskate will either avoid paying altogether by not being around when the his/her turn is due, haven't got their wallet/purse, come out without their credit/debit card, and a myriad of other excuses/lies which slip easily off the tongue. Worst scenario for the cheapskate is being pushed into buying a round, but they have already worked it out to buy the round without the mixers....until everyone else gets wise.

As a child ,I used to womble the cigarette vouchers that people discarded every time they bought a packet... My father collected them all year round and used them for buying our christmas presents..

My father in his especially desperate days had been known to collect fag ends that were to be found on every pavement ,unravel them and make roll you owns....

I've added a new word to my vocabulary:T I didn't know there was a word for people who will always "take anything off your hands". Right - got it = moochers.:) That is fair enough, in some ways, for people to be like that - as they don't cost the person they are mooching from anything.

Cheapskates on the other hand - I've now learnt to see that one coming re people trying not to pay their way in restaurant meals. Sadly - I'm going to have to miss out on a forthcoming meal I'd like to go to - because I can see that it looks likely to turn into one of those things where some bright spark says "Let's just split the bill equally shall we?" in an authoritative way and that would probably be what would happen. Cue for those who've had cheaper meals to save money (eg me) dipping out by subsidising the cheapskates there.

:rotfl: That's just my take on the words, others will no doubt think differently.

Often a difficulty when out with a crowd regarding the bill. I always say that I will pay my own bill to the waiter at the start to avoid this.

I hadn't thought of that - you must have some pretty efficient waiters in the places you eat out that they remember that:). I might try experimenting with that to see if that works for me for future reference.

I've already decided on not going to this particular group meal out - because it's a particularly forceful person organising it and not exactly a friend of mine (if you get my drift). I don't think the others realise this and I could just see it being awkward when I started getting out my money to pay for mine at the end and Mrs Forceful making a bit of a scene of it.

I knew someone who was definitely a moocher. When we would go out she would stand back from the bar to avoid being first to buy a round. When it was her turn, she would slope off to the loo, or worst still, say she had had enough to drink and so wouldnt get her round in!
When we went out for a meal she would do 'forget' her purse!
Needless to say, we don't invite her out anymore!!:rotfl:

There was one who got astro turf from a crazy golf place for her lawn to save the cost of upkeep. I don't get how that saved her much - she could get a cheap or free lawnmower from freecycle and mow it occasionally. They spent ages putting the turf stuff down and said they still had to sweep it and keep it clean.
