There were two when we last moved, I gave the twenty quid each.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

Depends how long the job is and whether it's harder than a normal job or needs more than normal carefullness.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
  • I had a 3 man crew and gave them a tenner each. Was a 5 mile/ £400 move with the most enormous wagon I've ever seen! They arrived at 8:00 and left at 6:00.

At £10ph (who knows) for 3 people with no break to speak of except a cheeky sandwich whilst completion took place, there's no real margin there by the time you've paid insurances etc. Fully loaded with employers NI and everything else I have no idea why they bothered tbh!

Only moved us about 10 miles, but did a great job and dealt with a few issues really well.

I gave them about 15 quid each (about 80 quid, for 5 of them), plus tin of chocolates while they were working and teas.

Nothin wrong with tipping to show appreciation for a difficult job well done imo. I don't tip if it isn't deserved (same goes with bar/restaurant staff).

Recently used a white van man (well, 2 men) for a £195 removal. They refused tea and biscuits & just got on wih the job. On time, fast, careful & friendly. Gave them £200.

How far did you go ?
In the past i've only ever hired a self-drive van and done it ourselves but i think i'm getting past loading & unloading all day long.

Generally, they do all right. They get paid well, the work's easy to do. Not got a boss down their necks most of the day. Several times a week they'll be offered all sorts of leftovers to take/keep/sell for themselves.

I happen to know a few removal men, the job is in no way easy and is not well paid.

They also have their boss on at them all day.

The leftovers they're obliged to turnover to their boss who might allow them to keep one item in special circumstances

Last time I had a removal I gave the guys a "slab" of beer. Don't know the rights or wrongs or the expectations but it was gratefully received.

It's not like restaurant service where waiters get paid nothing and rely on tips to make their wage up to National Minimum Wage. Restaurants like that in the UK are very rare though.
    Actually this practice is illegal.

Doesn't mean it doesn't happen - HappyMJ did say this situation is rare in the UK

You and I differ on our definitions of what constitutes easy. I think you mean straightforward rather than easy. But I would even quibble with whether it's that. Having moved myself and used professional removal men, they just make it look easy!

As for tipping, same as having any other trades people who do a job for you. Keep them supplied with lots of tea and coffee and really nice biccies. Then at the end tip according to how much you paid for the job, whether they went above and beyond, and how likely you are to use them again.
  • My removal team were doing a great job so I gave them two slabs of Stella. However, I should have waited till they had finished the job as they preceded to drink most of it at which point their attention to detail deteriorated alarmingly!
