Problems setting file association in Win 10

Most of my jpg's and gif's are associated with an app called photoviewer in Win 10. Unfortunately some files are called 'jpg-large' aren't and need to be re-associated with this app for consistency.

clicking on 'open with' options appear limited to Edge (the Win10 version of Internet explorer). These large files are probably caused and limited to files downloaded from the Internet. There's another option called 'Imaging devices control panel' which leads nowhere useful. Same in control panel / system/ choose default apps.

The Windows photo viewer directory also has 'imaging devices' as an application which just asks you to download or buy more stuff.

If you want to use the old Photo Viewer, try this to restore it:

It seems that people who upgraded from an earlier version to Win 10 will still have Photo Viewer, but on a clean installation of Win 10 (or a machine which came with Win 10) it's missing.

Just rename the extension of the jp-large files to jpg. They are regular jpg files so this will enable them to be opened in your normal jpg viewer.

What happens if you hold down Shift and right click on them?
Is there an "open with" ? then allowing you to set the preferred default application.

It's a new installation on a new disc, but I typed my old windows key on my computer sticker to register. Yes I could change every extension I download, I just assumed there was a better solution. What does everyone else use?

I assumed it was a this photo viewer
On the organization side, the Photos app aggregates all of your pictures (on your device and those on OneDrive) and offers a Collection view that sorts out photos that may have been taken during burst mode, as well as those that are accidental duplicates.

There is a new Photo viewing app in Windows 10, but I much prefer the old Photo Viewer.

If it was a clean installation of Win10 (regardless of key) then you'd need to follow the steps in that link I posted to get it back. Then you should be able to add it back as a the viewer for those files (I think, anyway, I don't have a jpg-large file to try it on).

Open your control panel, search for "default programs" in the top right, click on "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" from the option that pops up. Find .jp-large in the list, select it and click "Change program" - browse to your preferred program (Probably via "More apps > Look for another app on this PC) and click OK, the files should now open as normal.
  • Just download PICASA photo viewer. it free in google. its safe also because it is also from google. can open most of the files.
