why is that? most of the big ones do and I would imagine it would be common sense to, to ensure you can pay the bills."It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"

My understanding is that EDF doesn't assault you with a credit check, nor report your accounts to the CRAs. I'm not sure about SSE; I did hear that they might shaft you with a credit check but don't report your accounts. British Gas are by far and away the worst offenders when it comes to prying into your finances.
On the wider issue, I think there's a strong case for energy companies not be allowed to have any interaction whatsoever with CRAs.0 -
It's not unreasonable for someone to do a credit check if you've got the opportunity to borrow £1000 or more from themNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0

They give you leccy hoping hat you'll pay for it - unfortunately lots don't, so it's down to the rest of us to make up the shortfall. I'm all in favour of them checking that it's more than likely that you will and to give you a blackmark if you don't.
How many garages do you know that would let you put a grands worth in the tank in the hope that you'll pay for it eventyuallyNever under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -

You have a responsibly manage your account responsibly and live up to any agreed repayments with any company you ask for credit if you choose not to - pay the additional cost penalty.
Your energy provider has a responsibly manage your account responsibly and ensure [with a credit check] you can live up to any agreed repayments for the credit they supply, if you choose not to - pay the additional cost penalty.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. A credit meter offers potentially unlimited credit, hence the requirement by most suppliers for a credit check. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I know E.on credit checked me. Certainly not complaining because by companies carrying out credit checks can then filter out the high risk applicants and that way it helps keep energy costs lower.0
